Kamal Zaki Mahmoud Ali Shaeer

Prof Kamal Zaki Mahmoud Ali Shaeer, M.D. is Founder Ex-Director Future Research and Study Center (FRSC), Cairo University, Chairperson-Cairo Node of the Millennium Project, Professor of Medicine Emeritus, and Editor-in-Chief of Human Andrology.

Kamal is also President of The Egyptian-Arab Futures Research Association (EAFRA), a non-governmental organization (NGO) of individual and corporate think tanks, devoted to the study and research of the futures in Egypt and the Arab region, in the framework of the global future scenarios.

EAFRA develops visions about alternative futures; the possible, the plausible and the preferable, in relation to the current and future changes and challenges, and the available choices. Thus it serves policy making. Clients are the public (governmental) and private (non-governmental) organizations. EAFRA provides future-oriented information for both the domestic and international markets.

Since 1995 till now.

Egypt, Gulf Area, Millennium Project, Washington DC, World Future Society

What is it that motivates you to work or participate in the foresight / future studies / related field

To avoid or at least reduce human hazards and conflicts.

What goal/s would you most like to reach with your work as an African futures thinker / practitioner?

To encourage future thinking and implementation.

Who or what most influenced your thinking as a futures thinker / practitioner, and how?

Millennium Project work and objectives.

How would you describe the state of African futures thinking right now?

Just emerging, and individualistic.

What is, in your opinion, the main barrier to uptake of futures knowledge by African institutions and organisations?

Poor governance and poor states.

If you were to give advice to someone who wants a career in African foresight / future studies, what would you say to him or her?

Read first and understand the future of Africa, one reference is the State of the Future 2011 (annual reports), the Millennium Project.
