Special Issue of Regional Studies

Special Issue of Regional Studies: 'Re-imagining the future: city region foresight and visioning in an era of fragmented governance

Deadline: 31 July 2020
The special issue will explore, at a city regional scale (which includes cities within their regional context), how foresight, futures and visioning studies are being used to develop new spatial imaginaries and redefine strategic planning for both shorter and longer horizons. The critical questions here include: who initiates and controls city region foresight, futures and visioning? To what extent are these techniques embedded within existing formal and democratic forms of sub-regional government, or do they work better in alternative models of ‘adaptive’ or ‘agile’ planning? How are established methods of futures / foresight studies being used in practice? How might mainstream regional strategic planning and decision-making respond and learn from the city region foresight and visioning?

Aftershocks and Opportunities - Scenarios for a Post-Pandemic Future
While the world grapples with the current unfolding crisis, a growing number of politicians and business leaders are beginning to acknowledge the advice of future thinkers, futurists, and scenario planners on how important it is to also be thinking about the next horizon and beyond. This can help ensure that the decisions we make today don’t simply lay the foundation for a new set of problems over the horizon. Equally, understanding the types of future that might emerge post-crisis can help us plan and prepare for those possibilities as we reshape our current strategies. Finally, such future insights might help us spot, train for, and adapt to the new opportunities that could arise as a post-pandemic world unfolds.

This series of webinars, moderated by global futurist Rohit Talwar of Fast Future, is designed to provide a wide ranging global exploration of key aspects of the post-pandemic future: from the impacts on humanity, the economy, and globalisation through to health, education, and the environment.

April 9th 2pm-3.15pm GMT
Global Perspectives on the World After COVID-19
In this opening seminar, futurists and scenario thinkers from around the globe will highlight possible scenarios of how things could evolve over the next two to five years and explore the possible regional differences in both the potential impacts and opportunities that could emerge. Key topics to be explored will include:

The Economy - How might the global economy and regional markets be reshaped?
The Operating Environment - Are we looking at a complete reboot of the system or more gradual change?
Consequences - Who might the biggest beneficiaries and victims be?
Society - How might values and behaviours evolve?
Action - What should leaders, politicians, and individuals be doing now to prepare themselves for such an uncertain future?

Panelists
Puruesh Chaudhary – Member of the World Economic Forum Network of Global Future Councils, Pakistan

Jerome Glenn - Executive Director and CEO - The Millennium Project, USA
Tanja Hichert - Scenario Planner Hichert and Associates, South Africa

Aftershocks and Opportunities – Futurists Envision our Post-Pandemic Future

Call for Chapters – Post Pandemic Future

What are the possibilities for the future in a post-pandemic world?
While the world grapples with the current unfolding crisis, as futurists we know how important it is to also be thinking about the next horizon and beyond. This can help ensure that the decisions we make today don’t lay the foundation for a new set of problems over the horizon. Equally, understanding the types of future that might emerge post-crisis can help us plan and prepare for those possibilities as we reshape our strategies today. Next Generation Foresight Practitioners Awards 2020

Next Generation Foresight Practitioners Awards - Recognising the next generations' endeavours in shaping the future.

When we look at the world, we see new foresight practitioners enabling their communities to collectively imagine and create their own futures. They are diverse voices that are effectively democratising the futures field.

The NGFP awards recognise those helping to shape the future and improve lives through innovative strategic foresight. They aim to showcase stories of accelerating and scaling change in their communities towards a positive future. Through the awards we are seeking to identify change that is coming from a new generation — millennials, with new aspirations and values — from new geographies, with a growing foresight practice in Africa and Asia, and from second and third career practitioners entering the field from other domains, with fresh ideas and approaches.
