Biotechnology is one of the “grand challenge” areas that has been identified in the ten year innovation plan published by the Department of Science and Technology (South Africa) (DST), and supported by Cabinet. Following on from previous successful provincial Foresight exercises in 2008, and in support of DST’s biotechnology “grand challenge”, the Cooperation Framework on Innovation Systems between Finland and South Africa (Cooperation Framework on Innovation Systems between Finland and South Africa (COFISA)) decided to hold a biotechnology Foresight exercise for Gauteng (and also in Cooperation Framework on Innovation Systems between Finland and South Africa (COFISA)’s two other target provinces, W Cape and E Cape) during late 2008 and early 2009.
