Of the four sub-regions of sub-Saharan Africa, only Southern Africa is more urbanised than West Africa, which itself only surpassed Central Africa to take its place within sub-Saharan Africa in the early 1990s. West Africa only counted 15% urban dwellers in 1960 ; it is expected to reach nearly 60% in 2030. The situation and evolution vary greatly according to country.Globally, the proportion of young people (the under-15s) is expected to fall from 28 to 20% between 2005 and 2050 and that of the over-60s to increase from 10 to 22%. In 2050, the proportion of young people could still be 29% in sub-Saharan Africa, 28% in West Africa and only 15% in Europe. In sub-Saharan Africa, West, Central and East Africa are experiencing a fall in the median age, which is considerably increasing the dependency ratio, unlike Southern and North Africa, where the median age is increasing.
