What Will Be the Demands on and Future Objectives of Government?
Change is inevitable. The actions which governments do or do not take in the immediate, near and medium term will impact on the future of people and the planet. Prior to the pandemic, many governments already faced multiple challenges in managing their economies and delivering services. What will be the demands on and future objectives of government? The Future of Government Disruptive Debates will provide influential global leaders and thinkers a platform from which to share their contrasting views and ideas on how governments might seize the opportunity from crisis to take pathways towards achieving greener, more resilient and more inclusive development outcomes in the future.
Government Types of the Future
Over the centuries humanity has tried many versions of government and many variations on each type, today we will examine how technology and space colonization might impact what types of governments we use in the future.
Governance Challenges and the Future of a New Public Service
Public service has been severely challenged by several long-term trends: declining public trust in government and low public esteem; political polarization, partisanship and incivility; negative press coverage; and greater direct political attack on government from different groups and institutions. Many observers have described public service as being in a state of crisis. In such a climate, how can the human capital for governing be secured and enriched? How can citizens across all sectors sustain and nurture their own commitments to public service?

What a digital government looks like | Anna Piperal
What if you never had to fill out paperwork again? In Estonia, this is a reality: citizens conduct nearly all public services online, from starting a business to voting from their laptops, thanks to the nation's ambitious post-Soviet digital transformation known as "e-Estonia." One of the program's experts, Anna Piperal, explains the key design principles that power the country's "e-government" -- and shows why the rest of the world should follow suit to eradicate outdated bureaucracy and regain citizens' trust.

Designing Future Government Services
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Eight Inc. opened his address with his experience-design focused interpretation of a government, saying, “It is an expression to a core set of values that people experience. Therefore, the focus becomes how to design human experience and design for human outcomes, and let those outcomes deliver business outcomes. “This would come for an inherent understanding of what it takes to be successful for a human perspective.” Human-centric creation, he said, aims to create value, and one of the government’s responsibilities is to support and inspire the wellbeing of its people. Kobe’s company works with entities like Apple to reach the intersection between the processes that connect organizations with their audience, while focusing on great human-centric outcomes. This is a shift to employ the inherent understanding of human perspective.

The Future of Governments, from Data to A.I.
In recent years, we have seen many efforts to distribute government data. These efforts, however, often fall short in terms of their ability to integrate data, or visualize it. As a result, we have data rich governments that lack the tools needed to use that data in decision support systems. During the last decade, César Hidalgo has been engineering resources to integrate, distribute, and visualize data, which have resulted in a new pipeline for the accessibility of government data for both the general public and government workers. In this presentation, Hidalgo will tell the story of resources such as datausa.io, datachile.io, dataafrica.io, and more, which are revolutionizing the world of open data and how these changes are bringing us closer to a world where data can support government decision making and opens the door to the use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) in governments.
