Our selection of videos on this month's theme: Future of Solar Energy

(EN) Long-term Energy Scenarios (LTES) for Developing National Energy Transition Plans in Africa
This event held at the sidelines of IRENA 12th Assembly in January 2022 is the final session of the LTES Africa webinar series, featuring the development and use of LTES by selected African power pools. It aims to share the lessons learnt from the African power pools’ LTES planning practices, both in terms of institutional governance as well as LTES methodologies.

The potential for solar energy
This talk describes promising pathways for advanced solar technologies and for integrating solar with energy storage and other technologies. Becca Jones-Albertus also looks at the associated projections for solar deployment based on NREL's Regional Energy Deployment System model.

The beautiful future of solar power | Marjan van Aubel
The sun delivers more energy to earth in one hour than all of humanity uses in an entire year. How can we make this power more accessible to everyone, everywhere? Solar designer Marjan van Aubel shows how she's turning everyday objects like tabletops and stained glass windows into elegant solar cells -- and shares her vision to make every surface a power station.

The Future of Solar Power
Solar power has been promised for decades as bringing us a bright future, and at last is beginning to see widespread use. What new innovations and opportunities await Solar in the decade to come?

Sources of uncertainty in long-term global scenarios of solar photovoltaic technology
The deployment of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has consistently outpaced expectations over the past decade. However, long-term prospects for PV remain deeply uncertain, as recent global scenarios span two orders of magnitude in installed PV capacity by 2050. In this study, auhors systematically compile an ensemble of 1,550 scenarios from peer-reviewed and influential grey literature, including IPCC and non-IPCC scenarios, and apply a statistical learning framework to link scenario characteristics with foreseen PV outcomes. Results show that a large portion of the uncertainty in the global scenarios is associated with general features such as the type of organization, energy model and policy assumptions, without referring to specific techno-economic assumptions. IPCC scenarios consistently project lower PV adoption pathways and higher capital costs than non-IPCC scenarios. In the work here presented, authors thus recommend increasing the diversity of models and scenario methods included in IPCC assessments to represent the multiple perspectives present in the PV scenario literature.

What Will the Solar Cities of the Future Look Like?
This video takes a look at the city of the future that is built around solar power and solar technology. Seeing how people are building solar panel projects, not just on land, but on water (floating solar farms), and up in the air.

Innovative ideas and smart technology are transforming solar power
These ideas and business models are changing the way people think about solar power.

Upward Bound: Power Satellites
Beaming energy down from satellites in orbit to replace the production of electricity on Earth may solve many of our problems, and avoid a potential economic or ecological crisis such as energy bottlenecks or global warming. Today we will explore how wireless microwave transmission of energy down to rectennas may not only be possible, but could be massively profitable in the near future and spur our exploration and colonization of space.

Solar 3.0: This New Technology Could Change Everything
In this video we'll explore the world's fastest improving new solar technology, and provide an exclusive peek inside the lab of a team working on this breakthrough material.

5 Inventions Showing Us the Future of Solar Energy
When you imagine the energy of the future, solar power is probably in the picture – but in recent years, less than 2% of the world’s electricity has come from solar power. Here are 5 new inventions that are likely to change that.

Why Transparent Solar Panels Are The Future
A visionary new technology wants to upend the way we power society by harvesting solar energy from windows on your home, the windscreen of your car, and even from the screen of your smartphone.

The Future of Green Technology: Hyperloop and Solar-Powered Planes
In this episode, we look at some of the ways technology is helping us solve the big environmental problems of our age. From satellites that map sea surface height, to the development of sustainable fuels such as hydrogen, scientists are using their ingenuity to find answers that will enhance our lives in the future. An aircraft that runs just on solar power, a tech company that’s using its mapping expertise to fight floods and a farmer using futuristic technology to protect his tomato plants are among the innovations profiled in this episode.
