Fertilizer has been a key element in the growth of agricultural productivity in the last century and it will continue to be important in meeting the demand for food, feed, fibre and other crop products. The general objective of this study was to propose improved methodologies for FAO forecasting of fertilizer demand that are consistent with FAO projections of agricultural production in 2015 and 2030. These forecasts are needed for public and private planning. The specific objectives were to: i) review the literature on the adoption of fertilizer technologies worldwide; ii) categorize countries according to their position on the adoption curve; and iii) suggest up to three different methodologies.
