Many millions of people in developing countries face a very real and direct threat to their food security and livelihoods as climate change unfolds. Yet we have at our disposal a wealth of knowledge that, if turned into action, would allow these same people to build resilient livelihoods and prosper in spite of variable and uncertain weather. This publication describes the work of the centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and their partners that comprises this bank of knowledge, and urges decision makers to take the steps needed to put this research into action. It also presents a new initiative – the Challenge Program on Climate
Change, Agriculture and Food Security – which combines the expertise of the CGIAR with that of the Earth System Science Partnership, and which will open up new frontiers in the search for solutions for agriculture as the climate changes.
